I am a CNRS researcher in France. I work on the physical and mechanical modelling of granular materials. Despite century-long research, the topic is still of both fundamental and applied interest to a broad community. We need to develop new conceptual tools and theories based on the particle characteristics and their interactions. Moreover, many recent developments need to be examined in application to powder technology, soil mechanics, geological surface processes, pharmaceutical products, and many other fields.

How much does particle size distribution affect a packing of rigid particles? A single parameter called coefficient of uniformity, used classically in soil mechanics and accounting for both the size span and the shape of the distribution, scales quite well the space-filling properties.
